THE PARISH OF BARKWAY 
INCORPORATING NEWSELLS


​​This website provides people with information about the villages of Barkway and Newsells. Situated in North Hertfordshire close to Royston, the village has just over 800 residents and is a vibrant and active village with many clubs and organisations for residents to enjoy. The website covers information about the village ranging from its history to the Parish Council and its day to day managing of the affairs of the village. It is hoped that people will find the information to be useful and interesting. Comments on this website are always welcome. If anyone wishes to contribute ideas or information, please let us know.

​BARKWAY MARKET 2018


Barkway Market will take place on Saturday 12 May – 10am and 4pm.  It’s Barkway’s big day, when the village welcomes up to 4,000 visitors.  The market raises funds for local good causes including Barkway Village Hall, which oversees the event, Barkway Church and Barkway School.  Over 120 stalls are expected and admission is just £3.

What Barkway Parish Council does for you
Parish councils are the first tier of local government. They make all kinds of decisions on issues that affect the local community. Barkway Parish Council's duties include:
  • Commenting on planning matters as a statutory consultee
  • Working with the local Police on crime prevention
  • Managing community property and open spaces
  • Dealing with the financial matters relating to the Parish and calculating and requesting the annual precept and budgeting for its future use
  • Liaising with Herts County Council regarding maintenance and improvement of local highways
  • Ensuring that the local environment is maintained in an acceptable way ie ponds,waterways and footpaths are clean and tidy
  • Communicating important information to residents, so that people are totally aware of issues relating to their village
  • And overall, maintaining and sustaining the well being of the village

Hundred Parishes Society
An initiative to increase awareness, enjoyment and care of an area of 450 square miles of northwest Essex, northeast Hertfordshire and southern Cambridgeshire that is characterised by its rich and diverse heritage.
Barkway Parish Council supports this initiative and encourages residents to become members and take advantage of the many activities and educational benefits that are available.
